Brief History of Deep Springs Baptist Church
Members had begun to meet under a brush arbor in 1862, but petitioned Piney Grove Baptist Church for dismissal to become Caudle’s Grove Baptist Church in 1864.
Apparently Piney Grove Baptist Church granted this petition and Caudle’s Grove, which eventually became Deep Springs Baptist Church had it’s beginning. The name came from a school built nearby named Deep Springs School, so March 12, 1887, later years, the church was given the same name. The church and school name was due to a deep spring, which never went dry and was located nearby.
A survey of the minutes of the early church indicates that the church acted as a governing body to oversee the moral lives of its members. when a member was absent for three successive meetings, he/she was asked to come before the church to ask forgiveness.
There was an “Amen Corner”, and an organ. Often the organist was accompanied by a fiddle player. in the early church, the deacons always sat together on one side. A man and his wife did not sit together when they came into the church. The men sat on the left side and the women sat on the right.
As the church’s membership grew , various building and remodeling occurred, with the last remodeling in 2008.
